2.1 What is PubMed?

The United States National Library of Medicine has been indexing the biomedical literature since 1879, providing access to information necessary for research, health care, and education of health professionals.

What was once a printed index to articles (the so called Index Medicus), became later a database known as MEDLINE.

PubMed is the free tool accessing the MEDLINE database of citations, abstracts and some full text articles on life sciences and biomedical topics.
