Note to the training facilitator
This training material is prepared to help guide the training facilitator in providing training to health workers engaged or to be engaged in the care of leishmaniasis in Ethiopia. It covers the epidemiology, the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. However, the facilitator is expected to update his/her knowledge referring to update information on the subject matter. Priority in the management recommendations should be according to the Ethiopian national treatment guidelines for leishmaniasis.
Training methodology
The training should be given mixing different teaching methods that can help the trainees grasp the required knowledge and skills. These include reading the prepared module, lecturing using power points, group exercise and discussions, case based discussions, demonstration of some procedures, site visit and the like. There are discussion exercises at the end of each unit. The facilitator may arrange role plays, group discussions and poster preparations in groups. Facilitating the active participation of the trainees is important.
Materials required
Each trainee needs to have:
- A copy of the training module
- A note book
- Leishmaniasis case record form
- National leishmaniasis treatment guidelines
Facilitators need:
- In addition to the above
- Facilitator’s guide
- Self-prepared power point presentations to demonstrate pathogenesis and show relevant pictures
- Other references as needed
